GREETERS

CONTACT: Sweetthang

PURPOSE:

To benefit participants, strengthen the community and secure the future longevity of the event by providing critical information to each and every Black Rock City citizen.

As the first contact participants have with Black Rock City, Greeters have an invaluable role that helps shape and influence the quality of the event. Burning Man’s future survival is directly related to the success of our community. Our ability to communicate and connect with participants is paramount in that effort and the key to our success:

The more people know, the better their experience will be.  A well-informed community is a more self-sufficient one.  An educated community is a responsible one.  A strong and responsible community is less of a strain on our infrastructure and makes less of an impact on the environment.  Greeters provide an essential service, not only to each individual participant as they arrive, but to the community as a whole and, ultimately, to the event itself. By orienting, guiding and, hopefully, influencing, participants we create a stronger, happier community.

WHAT GREETERS DO:

As a Greeter you will:

  1. Work with a crew of 6-10 other greeters, directory guides, and Superflies (experienced greeters with radios).
  2. Welcome people to Burning Man and Black Rock City as they arrive.
  3. Communicate critical information about our city along with any new updates.
  4. Hand out printed materials including a map of the city; Important Policy Information (Leave No Trace and Camera guidelines for example); event information; The Gazette; and anything else that happens to fall into the welcome pack.
  5. Emphasize the critical points (Leave No Trace; Camera policy; etc).
  6. Answer questions, Dispense advice and survival tips, and give directions.
  7. Generally help orient and educate participants and facilitate their introduction into our unique community and environment.

TIME COMMITMENT:

Greeters are asked to commit to a minimum of 3 4-hour shifts but we understand if you have other obligations that won’t allow you to commit to more than one or two. If you are sincerely interested in being a Greeter, we’d love to have you on our team so get in touch with us NOW! We also encourage anyone who wants to work more shifts, to sign-up for more. But since we depend on you to work the hours you put on the schedule, please, only sign-up for the shifts you know you will absolutely, positively, be able to work! You can always take on more shifts later.
